I have a homebrew 5f1 I built that I've been running through an old Silvertone cab with two original Jensen C12Q's. It sounds fantastic, but the cab is a loaner and I need to return it. I have an old 112 cab that I'd like to use to get as close to the sound of the Jensens as I can.
My 112 cab has a Celestion G12K-100, which doesn't sound anywhere close to the old Jensens. I swapped it out for an Oxford 12L6 I had sitting around. It sounded great a lower volumes, but it breaks up too early and gets muddy at higher volumes. Now I'm thinking about trying the the WGS G12Q, but I'm afraid that since it has a similar power rating to the Oxford, it will break up too early in a 112 configuration, even with the low wattage of the 5f1.
So my questions are:
1) Am I right that the G12Q will break up as early as the Oxford or is that just an issue with the Oxford?
2) If I moved up to the G12C, would that keep me from getting any speaker break up at all with that amp?
3) Would the G12C/S be a good compromise between the two or is it a completely different speaker?
Thanks,
Bob
