RE: Laney Cub 12R replacement speaker

Hey WGS. My amp is a Laney Cub 12R: a single channel, 15 watt British style EL84 1x12 openback combo. The stock speaker is decent, but a bit undefined and too "boxy" in the mids. Looking for a gig-quality woody jazz tone and tweed style drive, I tried out a G12C/S but found it to be muddy, inefficient and lacking clarity, likely by nature of the pairing of the speaker, power rating and preamp. I've decided going full on Brit is my best option.

In short, I'm looking for a British style speaker with less ear pounding mids and  enough clarity and volume for jazz, but also enough breakup with higher gain for some nice vintage Telecaster crunch and pedal fuzz. One of your Greenback or G12 clones seems like a decent contender., but I'm not sure What would you recommend?

Yes ... I think you are headed in exactly the right direction!

Reaper (not HP) would be my first choice ... with the Green Beret as my 2nd .

I've heard good things about the ET65 and its clean sounds,, especially from you, Vaughn. The Reaper looks like a safe bet, but I've seen you recommend the ET65 for a Cub 12 as well. Would 15 watts be too little to drive the speaker like it wants?

Yes, an ET65 would be excellent!  But ... the original poster wanted to stay firmly British ... and the ET65 sounds about half Brit & half American!
