How about an ET90/Vet 30 combo in a 2X12 horizontal cab with 1/3 open or closed back options? How would that compare to the famous ET65/Ret30 combo? I have the ET65/Ret 30 in a 2X12 vertical cab. Love the distorted tones. Some of the best i’ve heard. The clean tones can get a little bit sharp in the higher frequencies for my taste. I’m assuming that’s the high end sparkle of the Ret30. Any other speaker suggestions?
First … yes, any "sharp"ness you hear would be from the Retro 30 … and yes, it does have a bit more extension on the top end than a Vet30/Vint30. Not really MORE top end … but the top-end peak is moved up from the classic spot on a Vintage 30 … about 2.5K … to more like 3.5K. That gives the Ret30 an almost Fender/Jensen like top-end, as opposed to the Vet30’s more urgent mid-forward voice.
So …
Yes, the Vet30 may be a bit more to your liking … and … the ET90 is just a bit more efficient than the ET65, so it would be a bit more dominant voice in the pairing than an ET65.
Having the ability to go semi-open or closed-back is ALWAYS an excellent thing … and ads a lot of tonal versatility. The Vet/Ret generally like closed, and the ET65/90 like both … but especially shine in open/semi-open configs.
Another excellent option IF you want to make the cab a lot thicker and a bit more British sounding would be the Reaper HP paired with a Vet 30 … I often think of the Reaper HP as sounding almost exactly like an ET65, but with more bottom and a but less top end articulation … it’s a very fat-n-juicy speaker!
