Get an attenuator.

Hi,

I can't decide which of these three I should get for my new 68 CDR. In my older DR I liked the G12C but it was VERY loud - especially for home use. I changed it for an original C12N that sounded great and later changed that to an original C12Q which I liked even more for it's inefficiency.

I really like the CDR for its breakup and general sound, but the speaker in there needs the amp to be louder than I can set it at home to sound good. I certainly need a speaker that keeps the great cleans AND all the nice breakup sounds from the DR - and the lower the volume that I can get this amp's goods, the better!

I like the idea of the G12Q for being probably the least efficient of them but I am afraid it might not have enough bottom end. The others I fear to be too loud or at least as loud as the Celestion that's in there already - I wouldn't win anything.

So how much quieter is the G12Q than the others? And how do the G12C/s and ET-65 differ in volume and sound? Has anyone compared them to the Celestion in the CDR?

The G12C/S is loud, louder than the Vet 30 and a lot louder than the Celestion G12T-75. I don't think you want to get an inefficient speaker to tame the volume. Try an attenuator. I have the THD Hotplate, it sounds very good at -4dB. Weber attenuators have a lot of raving review also. What you are doing is spending money just to get about 3 dB difference, an attenuator can do better than that.

Hi, IF you have not ... check out the big blog I did on the Deluxe Reverb ... it was using an original '67 ... but should hold true to your 68 Custom (cool amp, btw ...)

Ultimately, I went with the lightweight "Q" ... and I'm very happy ... sounds like you would be, too!
