Hi, I have been using a Blackstar HT20H through a pair of Blackstar 112’s for rhythm work in my home studio and am upgrading. I am buying a Marshall Origin 20 head and will be pairing it with a Blackstar 412 I picked up dirt cheap. My 112 cabs are loaded with WGS Liberator 80’s (which I adore) and I want to pair them in an X pattern in the 4X12. I use the low wattage head with a bit of preamp breakup and the master volume pretty wide open and hit it with an EQ to boost, the HT20 sounded okay this way but the Marshall is a BEAST! I have been eyeing the British Lead speaker as a compliment to the pair of Lib’s for the 4X12, I am basically using an early 80’s hard rock/glam metal sound with a bit more shape to the midrange to make it a tad chunkier. Kind of a Mick Mars of Motley Crue/Dave Murray of Iron Maiden kind of sound, but with more modern character from the speakers and EQing. Just want to know if I am looking in the right direction. Okay … two good pics here … one the Brit Lead you’re already thinking … that will take you in the exact classic “Mick Mars of Motley Crue/Dave Murray of Iron Maiden kind of sound” you describe … so great!
The other choice … if you also may want to go in a more modern/postmodern direction with less in your face midrange would be a pair of Ret 30s.
I had considered switching from the Liberator 80’s I already have, but I do love the pronounced mids and rounded off highs they give. I am assuming, bad habit I know, that the Lib 80’s will produce a little more low frequency content in a closed back cabinet and lose a little volume in the top end? The very pushed mid sound is quite what I am after, I play post-rock and the lion’s share of my tone shaping takes place in the midrange bands. More lows: yes …
Less highs … not really, but it kind of sounds that way as the lows are augmented, and the cab becomes more directional.
Sounds like the Brit Lead is the best choice
