1x12 speaker for EL84 amp

Hello.

I have a 15W EL84 amp head. Channel 1 is based on the Marshall 18W (just volume and tone) and channel 2 on a Marshall JTM (gain, TMB, master volume).

I use channel 1 turned up about half way for clean to mild crunch sounds. For lead sounds I add a little bass and gain with a pedal, or I switch to channel 2.

My style is mainly classic rock, so sounds are from almost clean up to moderate distortion (think Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin).

I am intending to build a ported 1x12 cabinet as per the design on the AX84 website. I need a speaker for this cab which will (a) interact well with the cab for a good bass response (b) give me the sweet highs when using channel 1 (c) but not sound harsh or fizzy with moderate distortion.

I’ve discussed this extensively on another forum (Bill Lawrence Wilde pickups forum) and I’ve done a search here.

I think a generally British sound would be appropriate for the amp and style. The main candidates seem to be the Reaper 55 and the ET65 rather than the Greenback types, although I am of course open to other suggestions.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Yes, I believe you have came to the two best options ... and I would lean towards the ET-65!

Hi.
I’m the same guy who started this thread, but I had to open a new account to be able to post.
I have the Reaper HP 16 ohm in a birch ply AX84 1x12 closed back ported cabinet. It sounds immense, if a little edgy when used with distortion.
I need to make another 1x12 to run in parallel with the existing one. I’m thinking a 16 ohm ET65.
My question is whether I should put the ET65 in a similar closed/ported cab or have one of the two in an open back cab.

Hi Simon … yes to the ET65 … and I’d say go open back to make it more three dimensional.
